Over 200 children with a range of mental/physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy, autism, Downs syndrome, spinal trauma, diabetes and blindness attend classes at Preodoleniye-L, a centre for creative arts and vocational education. These include acting, dance, singing, painting, origami, ceramics and crafts as well as vocational training in carpentry, machine knitting, hairdressing, computer science and English. Preodoleniye also offers an innovative riding programme and keeps two horses for this purpose. Without this centre these children would only have access to very limited education and training.
In the "Lastochka" pre-school programme, young disabled children are integrated with children who have no disabilities. Within this environment the able-bodied and disabled learn and play together, quickly coming to help and accept one another. Without having had the experience of this pre-school, many of the Preodoleniye children would have no chance of being able to enter mainstream schooling.
An important aspect of Preodoleniye's work is the theatre studio programme called 'The Theatre on Wheels.' On stage, working with professional actors and a director the children develop more self-confidence, expand their social skills and delight others. The group often packs up its scenery and costumes and goes on tour to hospitals and orphanages. They have won a number of prizes for dance, solo singing and crafts in Moscow city competitions.
ARC volunteers have helped with the preschool, with the English programme and with basic education programmes for youths who have received no education at all. In addition to funding the Lastochka pre-school and a range of therapeutic classes for older children, ARC has assisted this project with funds to develop their unique hippotherapy riding programme.
